Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

This magazine cover consists of a photograph of a man. It is a medium shot which shows only his head, arms, and above the waist. He is holding books in his hand.

When I first look at this college magazine front cover, my attention is immediately drawn to the masthead. It stands out because it of the colour, it is bright and yellow. The masthead is also known as the title for the front cover of a magazine.

Another thing I notice when I look at the front cover is the cover lines. The coverlines are distributed around the main image and the font for the coverlines isn't too large so it doesn't draw the attention away from it.

The selling line is above the masthead and is a sharp short description of the titles main marketing point.

The dateline is in the top right hand corner of the magazine and it says summer 2009 so the magazine must be a magazine that is issued every season.

There is a barcode which is used by retailers.

Induction: Movie Poster Textual Analysis

For one of my next tasks in my AS Media Class I had to analyse an Indiana Jones Poster using textual analysis.

When I first look at the poster I notice that there is a man holding what seems to be a whip. His body language shows that he is ready for any violence that could take place. I know this because he has his first clenched and he is standing very upright and his facial expression is very alert and direct. Also, he is looking directly at the camera so that means he knew the picture was being taken, he was ready.

The next thing I notice when I look at the Indiana Jones Poster is the setting. It looks as if he is in a cave or a tomb. This setting tells me that the film is going to be an adventurous/action film.

There is low-key lighting in this poster. Although there is fire which is very bright there is dark shadows, including the shadow on the right side of his face.

The anchorage on the Indiana Jones Poster looks very comic like, this gives me the impression that there may be a sense of comedy in the film. The colours are near enough the same colours as fire which adds a sense of danger to it.

The clothes Indiana Jones is wearing looks very scruffy, dirty and worn out which shows that he has been doing adventurous things.

One of the other things I noticed in the background is how the fire looks like a scull, this relates to the title as the name of the film is called 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'.

Induction: Re-Creation Of A Movie Magazine Front Cover

This was my first piece of work in my AS Media Studies class. I had to re-create a movie magazine front cover. The magazine cover on the right hand side is my re-creation of the movie magazine cover and the one on the left hand side is the original image.
I was familiar with the programme Photoshop so I didn't really experience any problems besides using the font. I wasn't used to using the font on Photoshop so at first I struggled. What I think I could have done better on my re-creation of the movie magazine poster is added more images to my front cover so it looked more like the original image. Another thing I could have improved on is the alignment of the word 'Empire' and the writing in the top left hand corner.
