Main Task: Contents Page FINAL

Main Task: Post Production Feedback

For this part of the main task, I had to get some feedback on my final products.

I used my BlackBerry phone to get feedback. I done this by saving my front cover, contents page & double page spread on to it then sending it to a few people and asking what they liked and disliked about it.

The people I asked all had different opinions on my final products and most of them were positive comments, however, there were a few things that didn't really appeal to my audience like the emptyness in the bottom left hand corner of the front cover.

Main Task: Case Study Of A Publishing House

For this task I had to do some research into a company that publishes magazines. The company I chose to research was a company called Music Mags. The company ‘Music Mags’ publishes music magazines.

The main focus of their magazine's is on jazz, guitars and bass. Some of the magazines they sell are called Drumhead, Drum! , Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar, The Beatles, Sound on sound, Revolver and a few others. The genre music mags mainly focuses on is rock. A few of the magazines I mentioned in the beginning of this paragraph are mainly to do with instruments that a rock artist would play.

The type of audiences that are targeted at this magazine are musicians. Mainly musicians who like drums, guitars, bass and orchestra. They have a broad selection of different categories.

The magazine targets different audiences which each magazine it makes rather than attracting the same audience every time because it is good to have variety instead of customers getting bored. Music mags targets different audiences so that they can entertain them and enhance customer loyalty which would then lead to more sales revenue as they attracting different audiences and not just one specific one. It makes more of an impact to target different audiences with each magazine.

Music mags do not have any other interests rather than their music magazines and instruments.

Main Task: FC, CP, DPS Mock Ups

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

These are my unmanipulated photos I took.

I have decided not to use this picture as my front cover because the allignment isn't right and the picture doesn't look very good for a front cover

I will be using this photo for my double page spread. There is enough space on the right hand side for me to put my text.

I will be using
this one as my front cover because the lighting is just right and the distance of the person from the camera isn't too far away.

This is a picture I am going to use for my contents page.

This is one of the pictures I am not going to use for my double page spread because he looks too happy and this doesn't fit my hip hop genre.

Main Task: Mood Board

For this task I had to design a moodboard which related to my genre of music. The genre I chose to focus on was Hip-Hop. I chose to add images of well known hip hop artist like Jay Z, Kanye West, 50 Cent & Lil Wayne. I chose to add these particular people because they are the most successful in that genre music industry. They usually have loads of money and guns so I put some of those images in the moodboard. I also put text images in there so it shows that my moodboard is made up of images related to hip hop.

Main Task: Profiling Your Audience

Jacob is 18 years old and his favourite genre of music is hip hop and R&B. Jacob is very passionate about music and has been since he was a young boy. Some of his hobbies are listening to music, going to the studio and chilling with his close boys. His ambition in life is to be as successful as most male hip hop and R&B artists. In his spare time he likes to shop for new clothes, but not just any new clothes, designer brand names. He is a very likeable character and he is always up to date with the latest songs and trends.

Main Task: Audience Research

For this part of the assignment I had to do some audience research so I knew what type of target audience I had. I had to ask a few people some questions about my music magazine and their opinions. I used my BlackBerry Messenger to ask people the questions and I used an app called Screen Muncher so that I could have proof of doing audience research. Here were some of the questions I asked:
+ What type of colours would draw your attention to my magazine?

+ Do you think it should be targeted at males and females, or just males?
+ Would it be more ideal to target it at a certain age range or everybody?

I got back some useful answers to my audience reseach and I now had a rough idea of what kind of magazine my target audience was looking for. They wanted vibrant, bright colours that stood out from other magazines and they wanted it to be a magazine suitable for both males and females.

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

MISE EN SCENE

COSTUME: We can see that the man in the double page spread is wearing a suit. Men wearing suits are usually wearing them because of something business related or because they are successful and have a well paid job.
PROPS: The prop in this double page spread would be the champagne bottle and glass he is holding in both his hands. People usually drink champagne if it’s a good occasion.
SETTING: The background is white and there are silver balloons in the background. The main focal point of the image is the man and the picture was probably taken in a studio.
NVC (NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION): The man is not looking at the camera, he is looking away. His body language shows he is comfortable where he is and maybe the reason why he’s looking away from the camera is because he doesn’t care.
LIGHTING: The lighting of the magazine double spread is bright because it’s white.

CONVENTIONS OF A MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
HEADLINE:
The headline of this magazine is ‘MAN MADE’. It’s a quote from a song of the man in the picture. If people see this then they will be drawn in because even if there wasn’t a picture, just by seeing ‘MAN MADE’ they would know who it’s about.
SUBJECT NAME: Under the headline ‘MAN MADE’ is the subject’s name, Rick Ross. It is in bold capital letters so it stands out from the rest of the writing in the paragraph.
DROP CAPITAL: At the beginning of the article the drop capital is the letter ‘T’. This is there so the reader knows where to start reading from.
COLOUR SCHEME: The colour scheme of the music magazine double page spread is quite basic. It’s black and white with a bit of silver in the background.
BY-LINE: The By-Line is at the bottom of the article on the double page spread and the photographer and the journalist’s names are there.
COLUMNS: Unlike most double page spreads, this one doesn’t consist of any columns, just one big paragraph.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation:
The magazine front cover consists of a famous man. This shot is a close up of a man and the colours are quite dull. His face is directly looking at the camera. The background of the photograph isn't really visible as the subject's head is taking up most of the space. The name of the man in the photograph is in red on the bottom left hand side and the colour matches the masthead.

Masthead:
The masthead of the music magazine is quite bright and bold. The colour immedietly draws attention to it when you first look at it.
Barcode:
The barcode is in the bottom right hand corner and this is used by retailers so that people can buy the magazine.
Coverlines:
The coverlines are distributed around the main image and not on it. This is so the attention won't be taken off the main image. The colour of the font is consistent throughout the whole of the front cover and it doesn't ruin the colour scheme. The colour scheme is black, red and white.
Selling Line:
The selling line is on the top right hand side of the magazine. It is a shorp sharp description of the magazine's main marketing point.
Dateline:
The dateline is above the barcode. It says Dec/Jan2010 so the magazine probably comes out monthly or every two months.
Website Link:
The website link is at the bottom of the barcode. This is the link for the magazine.

MISE EN SCENE

COSTUME: The man is wearing a hat and a hoodie.
PROPS: There are no props in the picture.
SETTING: The setting is probably in a studio.
LIGHTING: The lighting is quite bright on the subject's face but everywhere else the lighting is quite dull.
NVC (NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION): His facial expressions show anger. He's got an intimidating and serious look on his face.

Main Task: Introduction

My name is Aliyah Grant. I am currently studying AS Media Studies. For this assignment I have to design a music magazine. The music magazine will include a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread. Before I start this assignment I will do some planning & research. This assignment will be due on the 26th March 2012. At the end of the assignment I will write an evaluation.

For the front cover of my magazine I will have to come up with an original name for my music magazine. I will have to chose a genre for my music magazine and I will have to make sure that the pictures I take for my front cover represents the genre very well. Before I even start to make my magazine I will have to do some research and look at the designs some different company's magazine so I know what type of standards I have to aim for.

For my contents page, I have to have a few images on there but mainly text. I will again do research on contents pages so I know what type of things should be in there and what different layouts I could do.

For my double page spread of my music magazine I will have to focus mostly on the layout of it and make sure I stick to the conventions. (E.g, columns all in line with each other). As well as my contents page and front cover, the colour scheme will be kept fairly consistent and no uneccessary colours will be there.

For my evaluation I will speak about everything I have done throughout this assignment and I will include print screens and images to make it more visually interesting. My evaluation will have the pro's and cons of my work and what I would have done better if I had to do it all again. I will also be speaking about the programs I used and what tools I used in those programs in order to achieve my final outcome.
